There’s no denying that everyone turns their head when a high-performance
car comes rolling down the street. From the way it looks like something
that can slice through air and weave between traffic to even the sounds
of its engine’s purr, it is hard to find something
not to like about a well-tuned vehicle.
It really comes as no surprise then that Volvo is trying to get a piece
of that prestigious market by purchasing Polestar Performance AB, a company
that exclusively fine tunes Swedish Volvos into meaner, stronger versions
of themselves. Most of the modifications that they utilize focus on making
precise changes to the gearbox and throttle responses, overall boosting
the mid-range performance of the engine.
Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, has said that he and
his team wanted to expand the “special experience” driving
a Volvo Polestar creates to more Volvo drivers by introducing Polestar
as a model name for all of their high-performance cars. In short, we should
be able to expect sportier vehicles in the future from the company that
is well-known for making tanks that last forever but look, well, like a tank.
As If a Volvo and High-Performance Tuning Weren’t Hybrid Enough…
Rather than just putting larger engines under the hood and calling it a
day, Polestar intends to produce fast and efficient hybrid engines for
their upcoming models. Keep an eye out for the XC90 SUV out there, the
first vehicle utilizing the company’s newfound strategy of electric-and-gas
Does any of this mean that Volvo is going to become a big name in high-performance,
sporty vehicles? Only time will tell. Although, many people do see the
acquisition of Polestar as a publicity stunt or a desperate grab at a
market base they don’t understand.
If you have your reservations about whether or not Volvo can start producing
real high-performance vehicles, especially with a hybrid engine, there
is a way you can take your current model and give it that welcome boost.
