There probably isn’t a person in America who doesn’t want to
improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicle, especially now that it looks
like gas prices are primed to spike up again. Does running the air conditioner
or rolling down the windows when it gets hot help improve your miles per
gallon? What about fuel grade choice at the pump – does this matter?
Or are there more effective and simpler ways to improve fuel efficiency?
Consider these fuel saving tips when you find that your gas tank just isn’t
getting as far as it needs to be:
Tire inflation: Not only does driving on underinflated tires put you at risk of losing
control of your vehicle, but it also drains your gas tank. Fuel efficiency
is all about, well, efficiency. If you’re rolling around on lopsided,
malformed tires, you just aren’t getting as much distance as you
could be if they were properly inflated. Think about it this way: what’s
more likely to roll down a hill, a round stone or an uneven piece of wood?
Gas caps: You know that strong smell of petrol when you finish pumping your gas?
That isn’t just a tough stench coming off the gasoline, some of itis the gasoline as it vaporizes into the air. If you have a cracked, loose,
or missing gas cap, the gasoline in your tank can evaporate into the air
and out your vehicle at an alarming rate, especially when the temperature rises.
Spark plugs: There’s a lot of parts in your engine that make it work, and some
of the most underappreciated pieces are the spark plugs. If these tiny
contributors are dirty or worn out, they can misfire. Let this happen
often enough and you’re lowering your vehicle’s performance
and ultimately its fuel efficiency.
Air filters: Would you like breathing in dust and grime? Of course not! So don’t
let your car do that either. A dirty air filter essentially chokes your
vehicle’s engine, causing less pure oxygen to burn per cycle and
requiring more fuel to run than a system with a clean filter in place.
