When it comes to the safety and performance of your car, there may be no
more important piece of equipment than your tires. The rubber that meets
the road controls everything from your acceleration to your turning to
your braking. Want to get the most out of your car? Your tires are a great
place to start.
Everybody knows that after a while your tires wear out and need to be replaced.
Worn tires add a lot of risk to driving your car, including easier loss
of traction, greater chance of a blowout, worse stopping power, and lots
more. But how do you know when you need to replace your tires? Let’s
take a look at a few signs.
The Penny Test
This test is named based on the piece of equipment you need: a single penny.
Insert the coin with President Lincoln’s head pointed in towards
the center of the wheel. If you can see his entire head over the top of
the tire tread, then it’s time to replace your tires. Be sure to
run this test on multiple spots on your tire, including both the outside
and inside edges as well as in the middle.
Uneven tire wear, such as a bald inside edge when the outside edge is still
in good condition, is a sign that there may be an issue with your car.
While it’s not uncommon for the inside edges of your tires to wear
slightly quicker than the outside edges, particularly on your front tires,
dramatically uneven wear on the inside, or a balding middle or outside
edge could all be signs of bad alignment, over/under inflation, and more.
While the tread of your tires is pretty durable, the sidewalls tend to
be much thinner and much more prone to damage. It’s not a bad idea
to regularly inspect your tires for any cracks, chunks missing, or bulging
bubbles in your sidewalls, which show weak points in your tire, and also
leave it more susceptible to blowing out. A blowout while traveling at
high speed can cause a potentially serious accident, so replace your tires
as soon as possible if you see any of these things.
