If a Pontiac GTO of any year or generation rolls down the street, you know
it. There has always been something formidable and respectable about the
look and build of the vehicle. Perhaps this stems from its unique origins.
In 1957, the Automobile Manufacturers Association banned auto racing from
certain divisions of the market. Pontiac, who had branded its vehicles
as high performance racers, chose not to hide their heads after the ban,
but instead rose to the challenge and took their cars down a new yet similar
path: street performance. By fine tuning a design that could perform on
the street with all the precision and power of a traditional racecar,
the first Pontiac GTO was born.
Throughout the years, it has been synonymous with the idea of American
Muscle Cars. Many people actually contend that it was the inspiration
for the trend, and it would be hard to argue that point. With coupes and
convertibles and eye-catching colors, the GTO will always be an impressive
vehicle to see and drive.
Welcome to the Fourth Generation
In 2004, the fourth generation of Pontiac GTOs were launched. Only, this
time, they were being manufactured overseas. No, not in Germany where
so many great cars are born, but in Australia by a subsidiary company
of GM known as Holden. The Australian developed Holden
Monaro was rebadged as the new Pontiac GTO when shipped to American markets.
This is actually not as unique a technique as it might sound – a
previous blog entry of ours speaks of the
Chevrolet SS 2014, which is actually a Holden Commodore (VF) in disguise – and it
does not in any way detract from its craftsmanship.
There are, however, gaps in even the best of vehicles that roll off the
production line. Improvements can be made here and there, and overall
performance can certainly be enhanced. If you have a fourth – and
last – generation Pontiac GTO (2004 to 2006), you can take it to the friendly
