What’s in your engine’s inner workings? And is it enough to
give you the power and performance you desire? If you have been thinking
that your vehicle could use a little more oomph but don’t want to
go crazy with modifications, you might want to start seriously considering
how a methanol injection kit can work for you.
But first things first: what is a methanol injection kit? The system itself
is generally comprised of a tank to hold a fluid mixture of methanol and
water, a pump, an injector nozzle, and an electrical component to control
when to activate and deactivate the injection system. While that sounds
all good and well, what does it actually do?
By directly injecting an atomized mix of methanol and water into your engine’s
intake system, inlet temperatures can be dropped significantly as the
water starts to evaporate, absorbing residual heat. Cooler temperatures
mean cooler air inside your engine, which, as science tells us, condenses
the oxygen; the end effect is more air in your engine per cycle, directly
resulting in more fuel to burn in a combustion engine. That’s more
power! Additionally, a cooler inlet slows down the piston’s cycles,
helping avoid the chance of detonation and engine part deterioration.
But Why the Methanol?
Methanol is regarded as a high-octane fuel capable of burning at cool temperatures.
By using this in a mixture with the water in the system – usually
about 1:1 ratio – methanol can give more boost and power to the
system without rising internal temperatures. When working together, methanol
and water directly injection into the intake system mean suppressing incidents
of detonation and overall reduced air inlet temperatures.
Any Downsides to Methanol Injection?
As water interacting with metal is what causes rust, it is possible that
a methanol injection system will eventually damage your engine.
However, coating parts with particular chemicals or substances can help prevent
this side effect. In fact, the steam generated as the injected concoction
evaporates can actually help keep the inside of the chamber clean. It
all boils down to preparation, no pun intended.
All in all, a methanol injection kit is a great benefit to anyone who wants
to boost their torque and horsepower but do not want to risk the overall
health of their engine. It can also be a great benefit to people who regularly
tow bulky freight or up and down steep grades, as exhaust gas temperatures
should be significantly reduced with this system.
