Gas Engine Programmers and What They Do for Your Car

Gas Engine Programmers and What They Do for Your Car

If you’ve been shopping around for the latest and greatest modifications for your vehicle, you have probably come across the term “gas engine programmer” or maybe just “performance programmer” once or twice. Still fairly new to most people, many engine programmers are marketed as a miracle computer that can think for itself and magically enhance your vehicle’s performance. This far into the 21st century, most of us don’t believe in magic, though. So what is really going on to make these things work?

Rather than a trip into a fantasy novel, engine programmers will take you into the world of sci-fi instead. By hooking up to your engine’s control systems, an engine programmer will give you an in-depth look into the aspects of your vehicle’s performance that would normally be completely hidden behind the scenes. To put it into simple terms, it is like adding a slew of new gauges and information on your dashboard, reading and reporting things you might never have known existed, but are unexpectedly important.

Hidden dimensions and calculations that can be displayed in an engine programmer are varied but can include:

  • Empirical temperature reading of your coolant
  • Airflow diameter and speed
  • Pressure in the fuel rail
  • Real-time reading of load weight distribution

Making Use of the Data

Being able to see into the “brain” of your vehicle is pretty incredible and certainly interesting, but it wouldn’t do much if that is all an engine programmer did. Using the recorded data, the programmer can automatically adjust certain behaviors of your engine to beneficially adjust performance. For example, if you need an increase to towing capabilities, it can drop valve lift at higher RPMs, increasing torque. Or, it could cut your horsepower if you are pushing the engine too harshly and causing it to overheat.

Depending on the model you get, you may also be able to make adjustments manually to what the engine programmer displays and controls. Some drivers have taught themselves to improve fuel efficiency by adjusting their driving behaviors according to what the programmer is displaying. Others can even run an internal diagnostic when the “check engine” light comes on, allowing you to zero in on the problem before taking it to a mechanic. The benefits go on and on, and the list only continues to grow as the technology advances.
